If the children, say, have a strong liking towards one parent – or have a strong dislike toward a stepparent – do their objections have any weight in court rulings in deciding child custody? Or is it all based on income, possessions, all calculative?

Depends from state to state, in Tennessee for example a 12 years old can decide with whom he/she wants to live with. You need to look at your state statutes under child custody to find out the local laws.

What where their ages?
What was the primary reason you received custody?
I asked because I was able to keep my older minor children 14 & 17 then.
I have a buddy take keep his 13 year old daughter.
Another buddy who now has is 14 and 16 year old
And another buddy that thru a ton court time and money, was able to keep his 5 & 7 year old daughter..

VERY easy. File for an emergency ex parte child custody arrangement to get temporary full custody of your children, then take it to court from there to obtain permanent full custody. Check the fathers rights resources below for help on going pro se and skipping the lawyer.
